Alternate realities, also called parallel universes, are hypothetical realities that exist alongside our own. They could be completely different worlds, or versions of our own with changes based on different choices or events. It’s a concept explored in science fiction and cosmology.
How do we know about them?
We don’t actually know alternate realities exist. There’s currently no scientific proof. However, some scientific theories like the multiverse concept propose their possibility based on ideas like cosmic inflation during the Big Bang.
Are they real?
We don’t know if alternate realities are real. While some scientific theories like the multiverse suggest their existence, there’s currently no way to confirm them. It’s more of an open question that scientists are still exploring.

Theories
There are lots of theories about the alternate realities and their existence. However, we know different ways to identify them (or speculate with them)
The Butterfly effect
The butterfly effect is in chaos theory. It means small changes, like a butterfly flapping its wings, can have surprisingly large consequences later on, like a storm far away. It shows how interconnected and unpredictable complex systems can be.
Mandela effect
The Mandela Effect is when a large group of people misremember something in the same way. Like believing Nelson Mandela died in prison, when he actually passed away much later. It highlights the fallibility of memory and the possibility of shared false memories.
“Glitch in the Matrix”
In the context of popular culture, a “glitch in the Matrix” refers to a strange or unexplainable event that makes someone question if reality is a computer simulation, like the movie “The Matrix.” It’s a way of saying something seems off or unreal.
The multiverse
The multiverse is the idea that there are many universes beyond our own, existing alongside or on top of each other. It’s like a vast cosmic tapestry with countless realities woven into it.
“I knew the power of a single wish, after all. Invisible and inevitable, like a butterfly that beats its wings in one corner of the globe and with that single action changes the weather halfway across the world.”
Alice Hoffman, The Ice Queen
How can something so small change our lives?
The butterfly effect, the theory that believes on the importance of this little things. How a small action can change your whole day, or even life. In what ways do you think your daily habits, such as recycling or using public transportation, contribute to a more sustainable world? What actions can you take today to create a positive impact on your community and the world?
How could the butterfly effect change our lives?
This video illustrates a butterfly standing on a Mammoth and how different our lives would be if the butterfly didn’t stand there.
